Can advertising change the world?

Link Lust: Don't link me now, cuz' I'm having a good time.

It's really weird getting "embargoed" submissions set to be released at a certain date that is already appearing on other adblogs. So I reckon I'll just point to the CULTIVATOR Advertising & Design campaign for New Belgium Brewing Co. at the Denver Egotist.

HP Advanced Photo Paper "Ripped Exit" - ambient/outdoor

When I first saw this I swear I let a little "How the f... did they do that?" and so, for once, the little photos showing how it's was done were necessary. Now all I want to know is where the heck they've been hiding those swiss alps looking quaint towns in Malaysia. This clever little "exit" standee thing seems to have gone on a world tour. Jammy bastard.

One Show Student winners on "Doritos" live brief.

The print category received 376 entries. A Gold Pencil was awarded to art director/writer duo Elliot Nordstrom and Phil Van Buren of the University of Colorado for their campaign titled “There is Only One” which artfully featured the unique Doritos chip as the standout in a sea of generic potatoes chips, tortilla chips and crackers.

Other highlights of the show include a Gold Pencil awarded in the Interactive category to art director Thomas Jonsson and writer Cark Fredrik Jannerfeldt of Berghs School of Communication, Stockholm for “We don’t like banners,” an innovative computer plug-in program that would detect where advertising banners are placed and override them with your own personalized content. The tag line reads: “What if the Internet was just like a bag of Doritos. Filled only with the stuff you like.”

The youtube clip that needed to save "What happens in Vegas"

The footage of Cameron Diaz, drunk getting hitched to an equally soused Ashton Kutcher was "leaked" on the web to help boost interested in the movie "What happens in Vegas" which opened May 9. Adage reported:

those surveyed were asked for their top three choices of movies to see this summer, only 13% of Marketcast respondents named "What Happens in Vegas." Instead, most mentioned blockbusters such as "Indiana Jones" (May 22) or "Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" (May 16). In short, when a film is tracking behind pictures that don't even open until two to three weeks after it does, the studio releasing it has a potentially significant problem.

Complicating matters, Ms. Diaz was forced to skip its press junket last weekend after the sudden death of her father on April 15.

That has not been lost on Fox. The studio hastily cut new TV spots showcasing broader humor that might skew more male, and the planned leak of the illicit "wedding video" may yet stir up interest among heretofore unenthusiastic males.

"The 'wedding video' is only in the actual movie for a little bit, but they shot 10 minutes of footage, and it's fucking hilarious," said Shawn Levy, a producer on "Vegas" who has also directed the comedies "Night at the Museum" and "Cheaper by the Dozen" for Fox.

So far "What happens in Vegas" has received mixed reviews, and how many saw it the opening weekend hasn't been announced yet.

Time Cover by Euro RSCG junior creatives.

Go to the The TIME 100 special issue to see the series of special issue covers designed for TIME by a handful of acclaimed graphic designers, and a few jammy junior creatives at Euro RSCG New York. Who said that juniors never get to do anything fun?

Euro RSCG was the lone ad agency involved in this project, which also includes cover designs by Neville Brody, Chip Kidd and James Victore. So what did Euro do? Cut horizontal stripes of the faces of each of the top 100 people profiled by TIME this year and put them back together again. Cute.

Kudos to the kids at Euro: Ben Thoma, Katie Anne Naylon, Patrik Bolocek. North American CCO Jose Cabaco and New York ECD Hal Wolverton oversaw the project.

Top five best links in the "ad collection" adlinks.

So, I was doing some gardening, that is weeding out linkrot, from the Collections of ads links in the adlinks spurred on by the sudden spike in emailed questions to me this past week asking "do you know any good ad collection sites?" Well, yeah, but the links I know of, like most other things in my ad-sticky brain are actually already online y'all, so if you missed it here's me pointing with a giant foam finger at it. *points* ----> Adland's ad links.

American Package Museum. Oh aren't they so swell looking? "The primary objective of this site is to preserve and display specimens of American package design from the early decades of the 20th century." And they do it so well with nicely lit photographs that makes it feel like we've taken the Delorian to the past.

Good Logo! You know when your client needs a mockup yesterday and then sends you the logo in the shape of a badly pixellated .jpg? Good logo has saved my ass plenty of times, and serves as a inspiration site when creating logos so I don't make something far too similar to what is already out there.

Truth in advertising - Cigarette ads from back when "nine out of ten doctors smoke 'em". How fab.

Ad Classix - where you can browse and buy retro ads from the early 1900s to the 1970s. "AdClassix.com has spent years gathering a unique collection of original, authentic print advertisements spanning the last century. We deal only in the original vintage advertisement produced for any given product. We do not deal in digital copies or mass produced duplicates."

The History of Advertising Trust Archive:"Over our thirty years of existence we have brought together the largest archive of UK advertising in the world. From the outset our mission has been to make this material available for study and research at the lowest possible cost. HAT Archive houses unique collections and study resources dating from the early 1800s to the present day and we are always looking for ways to develop them and improve our services."

You too, dear adgrunt, can add your link to the links, but you'll have to be logged in to do so (spammers really love to try and get one past me there - they have carefully scripted automated bots that hammer the site for days at a time, for real). You can help weed out dead links too, just "report dead link" if you find one that is, this way we keep the link archive fresh and choc full of gems for all adgrunts in the world.

Dear Mother New York: We want to know about your Mothers.

Since Mothers day (USA) is rapidly approaching we thought we'd ask advertisings foremost expert on Mothers, Mother New York, a few questions about their dear moms.
All little children and by extension, creative grownups stem from somewhere, right? Yes that's right, all come from mom.

Most creative gift you've given your Mum?

Krystle Loyland: "Breakfast in bed when I was 7 years old. I made the bowl of cereal first, then prepared the rest. She woke up to a soggy bowl of Total, juice, milk and a can of fruit with the can opener sitting next to it."

Durk Barnhill : "5 hour scrabble marathon."

Andrew Deitchman: "I made her a super-computer made entirely from noodles and popsicle sticks."

Christine Santora: "Extra controller for the wii so she could box my dad in wii sports"

Ben Hughes: "My dad told me that women loved getting jewelry, so I made my mom some out of tinfoil when I was about seven. The whole deal -- rings, bracelets, even a tiara. She was good enough to wear it all out to dinner one night; strangely, she didn't have it on when she came home."

Rob DeFlorio: "Cash. No card, just cash
"

Bobby Hershfield: My Mom is a writer and I bought her a vintage typewriter. I put a white sheet of paper in it and typed, “Dear Mom, thanks for getting pregnant and having me.”

DB: aaaaw....so sweet.

Surprise! Dove "campaign for real beauty" was retouched.

My my, you must be really really naive if you thought that the Dove campaign was't a tad retouched. Of course it was, retouch includes getting better colors and removing distracting stuff such as plain old dust, seams in clothing or stray strands of hair. Still, some people find this quote from an interview with Pascal Dangin in the New Yorker a 'shocking revelation'.

I mentioned the Dove ad campaign that proudly featured lumpier-than-usual “real women” in their undergarments. It turned out that it was a Dangin job. “Do you know how much retouching was on that?” he asked. “But it was great to do, a challenge, to keep everyone’s skin and faces showing the mileage but not looking unattractive.”

Halo 3 Believe just keeps on winning.

McCann Worldgroup and T.A.G. in San Francisco continued their winning streak last night, grabbing the best of show honors at The One Show for the "Believe" spot. Just a week ago the 2008 International Andy Awards bestowed its top honor, the Grandy, upon the Microsoft XBox's Halo 3 "Believe" campaign. You may now place your bets on how far this ad will go at the Cannes Lions Festival this summer. I say "far" but not Grand Prix, what say you?

Dear Mom. This is how much advertising loves you.

And even famous fictional moms:

stereotypes - sometimes they are the funniest thing about mom.

The Cleaning Mom.

How about a new penis? The "boobs on the bus" group demand male genitalia on buses.

A group that calls themselves "Brysterne på Bussen" (The boobs on the bus) are a tad annoyed at the

»We wonder where all the naked men are. Why is it always naked women that we see in the public space. Today anything can be improved [with plastic surgery], and it is a shame that men can't also see how they can optimize their bodies. That they never see nor get the chance to compare their genitals to other mens.« says spokesperson Irene Manteufel a journalist and part of the group "The boobs on the bus" to Politiken.dk.
To show what a truly equal society should have they've taken a current plastic surgeon ad now running in Denmark which shows a pair of naked breasts with the line "New Breasts", and photoshopped it for a male version instead.

David Beckham behind the scenes on Sharpie ad shoot

in

A little birdie told me that David Beckham has recently wrapped up a global television and print advertising shoot in Los Angeles for Sharpie markers.

The TV spot, set to air in select markets around the world beginning July 15, shows Beckham using a Sharpie to autograph a variety of unusual items for fans, but when the time comes to return the Sharpie to its owner, Beckham resists. Dum dum DUM! Reminds me of our T-shirts in the shop "not without my sharpie!" Once you go Sharpie, you never go back you know. ;)

Here's a shot from the shoot (say that ten times fast) where Beckham high fives another actor.

I Love New York 2008

In 1977, Wells Rich Greene and Milton Glaser created the iconic I Love New York campaign, which helped increase tourism in NYC, but not so much in New York State. To correct the sins of the past, a new campaign is being unveiled today. Saatchi & Saatchi was hired to give the campaign a $17 million makeover and hopefully more tourists will leave the already crowded city and go upstate.

Happy 30th birthday, spam, from Adland with cake.

in

Spam, we've had our ups and downs, well mainly downs, but still, I'm sorry that I missed your 30th birthday. I would've sent you some "libido rapido" pills or secured your financial future by helping some Nigerian prince claim a fortune in offshore banks after a few nominal fees, but I was so busy finetuning my spamfilter and blacklists that your birthday slipped my mind.

You've come such a long way in 30 years, from that first spam mail that was sent to 600 people by Gary Thuerk, an aggressive DEC marketer sent out on May 3, 1978 with those messy headers. Now it's not just about tech-event announcements, there's also 419 scams, phishing, pump and dump stock scams and countless products being sold in mass email - 100 billion per day in 2007.

Spam is the heart of spamusement cartoons, spam opened the spam poetry institute and spam inspired Katharina Arndt to create affectionate embroidery with lines such as "Enlarge your penis" and "exquisite replica watches" in her 'Life should be full of luxuries' exhibition. No longer content with being synonymous to spiced meat or that really annoyed frustrated feeling one gets when sifting through an inbox full of junk in an effort to find legit email, you spam inspire writers and artists to soul search our high tech must have pill filled world. What would we do without you, dear Spam?

Save a shitload of time, bandwidth and money that's what we'd do. Here's your cake, spam, I hope you choke on it.

The Spam cake depicted was done by Magda's Cake Creations in 1996.

What if life was more like Facebook?

UK Office of Government Commerce new logo is for wankers

Here's another one for you lot who love to giggle at phallic logos.

This is the new logo for the UK Office of Government Commerce.

This is the logo turned 90 degrees

The Register says that a spokesman gamely explained:

"The proposed version, which you have sent over, has been shared with staff, and is now going through final technical stages. It is true that it caused a few titters among some staff when viewed on its side, but on consideration we concluded that the effect was generic to the particular combination of the letters 'OGC' - and is not inappropriate to an organisation that's looking to have a firm grip on government spend!"

Adland 5 good reasons to LOVE or LOATHE digital Marketing

The 50 best commercial parodies of all time according to Nerve (Non US IP version)

Folks that have US IP numbers or feel like being clever proxy surfers may head straight to the Nerve.com list of "The 50 best commercial parodies of all time". Europeans, Aussies and all ye other fine adgrunts around the world hop inside where I've collected all the videos that don't say "The clip you selected isn't available from your location", "the requested video can not be displayed in your region" or "this clip is no longer available" to save some time.

The Economist new campaign - bringing back the visual.

AMV BBDO London has launched a new branding campaign for the economist, and with it they bring back the visual. And not just any visual,s they've gotten a hold of Paul Davis, Anthony Burrill and Design team Non Format (who did the "Balance" ad you see here) to lend a hand.

Mark Fairbanks and Tim Riley were the writers on this project, together with Paul Cohen Art Director and Paul Brazier is the Executive Creative Director.

I love it, especially the "Balance" poster, my fave.

Add radio ads with one single simple upload.

Hello adgrunts.

The whole idea of adland has always been that adgrunts themselves should be able to add their own work. This requires things to be dead simple and very automatic, so I've been working on that and can now unveil the super-easy way to add radio ads. All you need to do is title it, choose what type of ad it is, add credits and then upload the mp3, wav or mid file your radio ad is in and presto, the rest is taken care of automagically for you. :) Please give it a go!
