Ad Chat - Richard Gorodecky

This week, Richard Gorodecky, Executive Creative Director at Amsterdam Worldwide answers our questions to give you an inside peek behind the creative.

1. What's your favorite funny story about yourself?
At six I was the donkey in the nativity play at school. My mask slipped down over my eyes and I couldn’t see anything. I thought that if I pushed my mask back up people would realise I wasn’t a real donkey. So I spent the entire play wandering off in random directions and bumping into things.

2. What piece of art (movie, book, music, painting, etc) has influenced you most? How or why?
The book The Hitch Hikers Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams is almost entirely responsible for the shaping of my sense of humor. I read it so many times as a kid I could pretty much quote it from start to finish.

3. Who was your favorite mentor and why?
My Uncle Bill who taught me how to fish. My friend Stefan Ronowicz who taught me, amongst other things, what it means to be a man. John Mathews who believed I was a writer even when I didn’t.

4. What's one thing that excites you about the future of advertising?
The unknown.

5. If you could meet with anyone in history (dead or alive), who would it be and why?
Most of the people that spring to mind are way too heavy for such an interview, so I’ll go fishing with Ernest Hemingway if you can arrange it. Thanks.

6. What’s your favorite website/blog, and why?
Just one? That’s tough. I love Springwise.com. An endless stream of brilliant ideas applied to every area.

7. What's your trick to break out of a creative block?
I work through them. Sleep can help as well.

8. Who is your advertising hero and why?
Howard Gossage. If you don’t know why, read The Book of Gossage.

9. Tell us one of the things on your bucket list.
Travel the world for a year with a fly fishing rod and write a book of my adventures.

10. What piece of advice would you give someone starting out?
Don’t be so serious. The really good stuff only comes from having fun.
