First presidential topical ad ran this morning.
The first topical ad using the stand still in the U.S. Presidential race wasn't produced in the states - it's the Dutch who jumped on the subject.
Publicis in Amsterdam ran an ad in the Telegraaf this morning for their client Capacity, a job recruitment agency specializing in middle and top personnel for marketing communication and sales.
The ad depicting both Gore and Bush shaking hands and looking happy read: Ever thought of a shared leadership?, in Dutch the word "Duobaan" means that two people share the same job part time.
Victor Silvis and Peter Clercx are the Creative directors of Publicis and the masterminds behind this ad.
Contrary to popular belief, multinational agencies don't always move slow.
"We won the client, Capacity on Monday, on Tuesday we watched the Presidential Election on T.V., on Wedensday we made the ad, and it ran this morning." Says Victor rather humbly.
"So how does it feel to set a speed record?" I ask, to which both Victor and Peter respond. "Great!".
Clients that are willing to let some control go always helps too - Capacity never saw the finished layout before the ad ran, there was simply no time.
"With clients like them, there are more great ads to come." says Sophie Brüggen, the Account Director on this project.
Well done kids - and has anyone out there seen any other topical ads on the same subject?

Editorial note: In early February 2001, Publicis lost Capacity as a client. This turned out to be the only ad they ever made for this client. The reason for their discontinued co-operation is not revealed. Not even to us who worked there and on this client!
[Full disclosure: I art directed the above ad. my CW Maxim van Wijk wrote the body copy and headline - we were handed the gig on Wed morning from our CD's at the time, Peter and Victor.]

Speed takes guts and control - just like racecardriving. Very cool to have a client let you go ahead. Even cooler that they still haven't counted all the votes as I read this! Yihaa! Well -timed!
I'm looking forward to see tonight's papers, since this was the only topical ad in all of the dutch newspapers this morning.
Good Job!
I don't quite get the word "duobaan", but I like the idea very much. Did anyone see any other topical ads on this subject? Were there any other in Amsterdam? I'm in spain and have seen none.
*newsflash* I just heard via the emailgrapevine that at least one TV spot was running Thursday for one of the big pizza chains--Pizza Hut
or Little Ceasers--involving a grandson asking a grandfather who won the 2000
election and the granddad replies they're still counting. Then they cut to sell
copy about not having to wait for a great deal of pizza.
TV-topical, now there's a feat! Anyone in the U.S. actually *seen* this ad? My source, Wes the writer here, has only second-hand info as well.
Ok - so the newsflash was true and BBDO had actually made a real Topical TV commercial. I read the copy for that. I am pretty impressed they made TV that fast.
I think however that this ad is the better ad - because in this one the idea is more relevant to the product! First rule of topicals - if it's got nothing to do with your product - then don't do it!
The Pizza ad felt like so many american ads do lately - "forced" to use DB's favorite expression. Pizza? Presidents? Only a dollar ninetynine?
Capacity at least actually offers help in finding part time leadership jobs (yes I went to their site but I only know german so I'm guessing what it said). Relevance.
I'm sure there were many more "presidential" ads made than justthe two you speak about - should we not try and collect them? They could be a large chunk of history one day.
