ART IMITATING ART

Err umm there is a disturbing similarity between the D&AD award winning Britart.com campaign from Mother and the ADCNY award-winning L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art campaign from TBWA/Chiat Day. This is probably old news but it's my first post so there.

(update: images added thanks to Robblink)

Mothers Britart campaign. D&AD winner the year 2000.

TBWA/Chiats version.
and last but not least: Artist Paul Richards version:

A 1998 Richard Piece

The britart campaign has been spoken about here before - not in the Badland section though but in the news section. See Ambient Media - in and out of fashion for the article that was commented quite lively.

Was the Chiat/Day one made later (they have some bad rep..) Or earlier?

Any awardsbooks/annuals or something I can go look in to find images?

Anyone else have images?

The Mother ads can be found at:

http://www.luerzersarchive.net/home.htm

They were printed in Luerzer Archive's Vol. 3, 2001 issue.

I have to go digging for the Chiat ads. I believe they were done earlier. Since both shops are creative powerhouses, I think it was just a coincidence that they shared the same idea. No creative crime was committed in my opinion.

It seems that this "art" campaign has more controversy. A NYC artist created a piece with the same idea in 1998!

You can find both Chiat Day and Paul Richard's pieces and the entire story at:

and the follow-up article at:

Aaaaah.. Now this makes things interesting.. The artist sent his book out to "TBWA chiat, some agencies in new york and London" but received?

Could, naturally, still be a complete coincidence.

from aarticle in the second link you mention:

"Adding fuel to the fire is the fact that, a year and a half ago, his portfolio was solicited by admirers of his

Fantastic find. Anyone keen on interviewing the artist? I'm interested to know *exactly* who he showed his portfolio too. London is a big city after all.

Coincidence? Perhaps. Great idea in any case.
