Is JCPenney teaching daughters to drop their pants!?

Last week, Salon/AP posted news that US department store giant JCPenney voluntarily pulled one of their back-to-school ads due to multiple complaints of its illicit, provocative and sinful nature.

Well, Adland now has the clip under fire. Now, I understand parents wanting to protect their daughters from becoming sexual objects in the eyes of lustful teen boys (and lustful men, etc.), but c'mon! It's a joke! A gag! A twist played to humorous effect! Tastefully done! No naughty bits are exposed! Ach. Just click on the 'read more" below and judge for yourself.

Well, people? Are you offended, or did the morality police getting carried away once again? Comment!

So what's up with the double meaning on "hottest hipsters"? What exactly is JCPenny trying to say?

I am deaply offended by this ad, but only because there's no hard core pornographic material, and I was in the mood for some.

Does anyone else find the tagline "its all inside" particularly amusing in this context?

Upon closer scrutiny of the commercial, I discovered that
the Hipster "jeans label" on the pants the daughter is wearing is not a
label after all - it's a giant acid blotter! The girl is trippin'!

But that's not all! After extracting and reversing the audio, we can
hear the REAL message that JCPenney is sending out to the youth of
America!

Satan talking to impressionable young girls!

ACTUAL UNVERIFIED TRANSCRIPT:

",,, YOU LIKE THESE JEANS... EXCELLENT... THIS CUT... HAS NOT... YES...
MY EYE... THERE MUST BE INLETS... NO IDEA THESE ISN'T BAD...
PANTYHOSE... YOU NEED ME... I, AHH, SEE... THIS GOTTA BE BAD TO SEARS,
FOR THIS VERY SPECIAL SALE... AHA... HOW ABOUT I GET TO MAKE YOU A SEX
MASSAGE?"

Shocking stuff!

Mothers and daughters, evil is afoot! Lock up your daughters!

I wonder if Sears wil sue them now that you have revealed the true meaning of the ad. I'm looking forward to the trail - live on CNN - daily.

*raises hand and says AYE!*

Trial TRIAL - darnit. Get used to it, I'm an art director who can't spell.

[Here's me really getting serious, now]

I see the humor in all this, I really do.

But speaking as the father of a seven year old girl, this s**t scares me.
(Speaking as the husband of a very strict mom, I can tell you confidently
that there is no way my daughter will ever go out of the house looking like
that.)

But here's the thing. Because there are people like me out there, the spot
all of a sudden becomes funny. You expect parents to react the way I do. The
mom, a much cooler person than me or my wife, apparently, goes for showing
more skin.

I happen to think that TV and commercials and fashions have a profound
effect on girls. (Boys, too, but to a far less damaging extent).

I think it's up to people like us to draw a line in the sand and say, No,
this is not the kind of stuff we should work on. I refuse to be another log
on the fire intent on burning down the institution of childhood. Regardless
of how out of control the blaze has gotten.

I think depicting pre-pubescent girls dressed like Britney Spears and
Christina Agulera sends a message to society that looks, low body fat and
sexiness are attributes to be prized over thoughtfulness, humanity and
brains. (Maybe I'm raising my daughter differently than the rest of the
world, but it wouldn't be the first time I zigged when the rest of the world
zagged.)

If someone handed me a brief to sell low cut jeans to
nine-to-twelve-year-olds, I would simply hand it back and say, "go hire some
other word-monkey to do this job."

There is nothing more provocaive about this ad than the underwear print and catalog ads of years ago. The ads and packages for pantyhose showed nice bare bottoms and stocking feet in pantyhose to show how soft and comfy they looked and felt. Anyone who wears them, myself included, would agree. That's truth in advertising.
