Why doesn't everyone have an avatar?

Why is it that new users don't have avatars? Everyone else that I know around here has one.
I'm thinking of switching to this. I'm on a japanese kick. (attached)

Japanese iChat icons are sexy.
Beats me, I thought that now when people could upload their own they'd be happy to sneak in silly pictures of their choice. (and I feared, mebbe even sneak some dirty shots in)
People are lazy.
Advertising is old school, not many can be bothered, I guess.
Those with avatars are cool, or they want to be cool, or they think they are cool. The same goes for those without avatars.
I like the avatar I got with the old Adland. It's just as waffly as I am. You know.. whatever, man.
I tried to change my avatar, but I kept getting these error messages:
* The selected file /tmp/tmp_nzxe01 could not be copied.
* Failed to upload the picture image; the pictures directory doesn't exist.
Odd. But fixed! You can change it now!

No, thank YOU. It's probably been that way since I moved all the folders onto another disk partition and I would never have noticed it if you hadn't said. ;)
Aaah, my strange hobby, build a little server here, move a little disk there, poke a little CSS there. ;)
