User generated ads and The Three Stooges.

In Healthy, Wealthy & Dumb (1938) Curly enters a radio contest to come up with a jiggle for a brand of glue. The contest is sponsored by the Coffin Nail Cigarette Company. (Yes, people knew smoking was bad for their health back then).

It reminds me this user generated advertising that seems to be all the rage today is nothing new, but it is just as funny.

I gotta see that. :)

The prize for winning the contest is $50000. In 2006, that would be worth $715400.99.

Hmmm, wasn't Spam (Spiced Ham) the result of a competition too?

This user generated content thing is getting out of hand. If I hear another account handler talking about it as if it's the only thing that can save advertising, I'll be available for interview in jail.

Users/viewers/humans created thing anyway, way before the internet. The only new thing about it is that it allows people who would normally be ignored a platform. There are a few gems among a big pile of rubbish. Just trawl through YouTube for a day and then see how many masterpieces you find - or can remember.

Where did the name SPAM® come from?

The story of SPAM® luncheon meat began in 1936. Hormel Foods devised a recipe for a 12-ounce can of spiced ham. Jay C. Hormel was determined to find a brand name with a distinct identity that would set it apart from the competition. The company offered a $100 prize for the best name for the spiced ham product. The winner was Kenneth Daigneau, the actor brother of Hormel Vice President Ralph Daigneau. He created the new word by combining the “sp” from spiced ham with the “am” from ham.

That $100 in 1936 would be worth $1454.55 in 2006. They sure don't pay for user-generated advertising like they used to.
