Chew with your mouth closed, dammit

Your mother taught you to eat politely, and not to talk with your mouth full. She had good reasons.



NOBODY wants to see or hear people chewing, smacking, crunching, or slurping.



NOBODY likes people who talk with their mouths full. And that includes a single sweetie just as much as a gobfull of sandwich.



Do you really want to have your product permanently associated with feelings of disgust, and a mad rush to change channels or mute the sound?

Loads of them. The worst was the commercial for Aero chocolate bars, where two women stand by the vending machine in an office with slabs of chocolate "melting" on their tongues while they talk about it. The dialogue sounded like "Ghhlgl... glglghh" -- like some drooling mutant. Just thinking about Aero now makes my stomach turn over, and I*m pretty sure that wasn*t the intention.



The current Maltesers and Werther*s Original ads (in the UK) feature people talking with sweets in their mouths, and they*re annoying, but not quite so stomach-churning.



The point I*m trying to make is Why go to such effort to make a mainstream commercial that is guaranteed to disgust and annoy a big proportion of the mainstream?
