Subliminal Advertising
Interesting, I*ve always wondered about the method behind subliminal ad production, is its conceptually different to create than regular ads.
Forgive me if that is a naive question, I*m a newbie to the marcom industry trying to learn about advertising.

I am doing a research project on Subliminal Advertising. I am in dire need of TVCs in which Subliminal Advertising has been done. Kindly do upload any commercials having subliminal effect in it or mention the product categories which have done this and i will search for those advertisements.
First you*re in the wrong forum. You*re looking for a commercial, there*s another section for that.
Secondly, I think subliminal advertising is a hoax.
If you were to have a relaxed movie and put a frame that is completely different, people would notice it. And hate you for it. That 1/25 of a second is long enough to bother people. A Coca-Cola logo would not only be unconsciously recognisable, also consciously.
Having said that, if you do find examples, please post them in this forum.
<i>There are spoofs on this subject. There*s a Dutch radio campaign, but that*s completely in Dutch. And then there*s the movie Fight Club, showing you hidden pictures of penises.<i>
Okay, so I shouldn*t use <i>, but this instead. lol
Hygge is absolutley right on all accounts.
#1 - you need not post everywhere, once is enough three times is too much, and "Job Ads! Headhunter and Hunting help" is not the forum for this as you might guess by the title. I*ve deleted your other postings.
#2 - there is no such thing as subliminal ads. You may start your research here;
Subliminal Advertising? from Adcult USA and Ogilvy on Advertising
An early experiment in subliminal advertising at a movie theater sunstantially increased sales of popcorn and Coke. = false
There are some more links to follow at the Wikipedia subliminal messages
Though like Hygge says ther are a few ads that make fun o that whole subliminal thing. Did you want to see some of them?
Sorry abt so many posts.. guess the pressure just got to me.. Appologies once again to all..
Well, I guess the commercials which make fun of subliminal will help also.
However, the material i have gathered uptil now is mostly related to print ads and how subliminal messages have been used via them.
In regard to Print Ad, i cant comment. One tends to c the messages embedded but if anyone starts visualizing a particular picture in an ad i am sure .. u do tend to c it laterz on..
any comments on this..
eg can be of Camel Cigarettes
I am still looking out for TVC related to this.
Oh! I do remember subliminal print ads.
There*s one in a D&AD book (don*t ask me which one somewhere in the last 6 years) from Martini. It*s a huge billboard, but when you look at it, you see only lines. It*s when you jump up and down that the logo is visible.
And then there*s another, which unfortunately I*ve only heard of. Apparantly, if you were looking at this ad, you couldn*t see the logo. But if you weren*t, you could see it from the corner of your eye. But as soon as you focussed back to the ad, you couldn*t see anything of it.
"It*s a huge billboard, but when you look at it, you see only lines. It*s when you jump up and down that the logo is visible."
and as we all know, everyone jumps up and down when they look at a billboard. wink
Don*t you? grin
George W. Bush aired a DemocRATS subliminal ad in 2000

well of course, Hygge! *bouncy bouncy* razz
>>*bouncy bouncy*
You shouldn*t do that. People have to look at the ad, not at the baywatch babes jumping in front of it. lol lol
Getting a bit more serious again...
If you*ve got the time for the research, the books by Wilson Bryan Key are the place to start. His first book, "Subliminal Seduction", is the easiest to find, but later books talk more about TV commercials and broader effects in society. It*s best to read the books in order, as each one refers to the previous ones to build a cumulative argument.
The four books in order are Subliminal Seduction, Media Sexploitation, The Clam-Plate Orgy, and The Age of Manipulation. The older ones are out of print, but all are available via Amazon.
Key uses the term "subliminal" in a broader sense, meaning any stimulus intended to bypass the conscious logical facilities. It might include embedding words into a picture, but not necessarily. In TV commercials, there is a lot of scope to play with sound and motion.
As an example, in the Superbowl Diet Pepsi ad http//ad-rag.com/127688.php Caff mentioned that the popping of the Pepsi can seemed phallic. If you pay even closer attention, you*ll notice that during the song the can pops and the spray spurts out exactly in synchrony with the word "come" in the lyrics. Key would consider this a perfect example of a subliminal in a TV commercial.
I*ve just run across this site, which you might find interesting http//www.classroomtools.com/sublimad.htm
I remember the very first time I saw the "rats" commercial - I pointed it out to my girlfriend, who saw it the next time it aired. It was "roll your eyes" disappointing to me, as I saw it becoming a cheap-shot campaign year.
I don*t know whether one could consider product placement a form of subliminal advertising. We define ourselves through our shows and videos so much that style and branding seem synonymous.
I often wonder if the appeal of the letter "x" and Nike*s check mark is that they subliminally separate those who protest the nature of our society from those who agree with it - with the "x" largely appearing in a black color scheme (black=negative) and the check typically in white (white=positive). Food for thought, maybe.
The overemphasized hips and chests in the 1940*s and *50*s women*s styles might be argued as subliminally advertising child bearing.
Metaphors are used, like "rats" above; or white for good and red for crisis or opportunity.
Sometimes it*s just not subliminal enough

Hahahaha, I had that emailed to me the other day and thought it was hilarious. Was gonna post to the front page but life got in the way. It*s funny as hell.
