This must be happening everywhere but...you begin young or old I got in at 25 in advertising...win awards...move up the ladder and make the good money...your married, have one kid...choose the wrong agency...work on no brainers suddenly you*ve got no awards to show...agencies that once chased you are now thumbing their noses...you work for a small organisation that needs a design cell make half the money...what happens next???? Kick your way out or lie down and play dead... rolleyes
Any ideas? No I*m not gonna sell Amway!
Hey mate, I know what you*re saying (I*m also a lot closer to my Golden Jubilee than I like to admit), however
1. Age is merely an attitude, a psychographic- far more relevent than a demographic
2. Part of a creative*s demonstrable currency is their *book* and the amount of awards they*ve won - but the other part comes from how *out there* / edgy you are. Remember, there aren*t even award categories yet for some of the leading / different ideas.
3. So, if the awards wall is looking a little dated - take them down and lock them in the shed - it helps to stop dwelling on the past, and gives you a fresh start.
4. It*s no longer just about what you already know how to do - there*s too many people in our industry that talk about having *10 years experience etc* - when in a lot of cases, they*ve had one year*s experience ten times over!
5. Remember, that as the rate of change continues to increase in this crazy world, nobody has the monopoly on ideas. As long as you wake up every single morning, excited and curious about how the world has changed while you slept - you*ve got as much chance as any *young gun* to come up with category busting ideas.
6. The *new creative* (jeez, I hate the *buzzy* sounding terms) - I totally believe that it*s more about context, channel and content than ever before. Passion for the BIG IDEA, not just the BIG AD CAMPAIGN - and a lot of the time, these big ideas do not equate to big budget campaigns - also smaller clients are normally more willing to try out new stuff.
sorry about this *preachy* sounding response, but I read your post just after a meeting with my own shop*s parent agency, one of those meetings where yet again the reaction to what we*re doing and what we*re thinking ranges from total disinterest, to "Uhoh.. that spaceman lunatic is back to upset our tidy view of our advertising world again**
Personally, I prefer being infamous as an *off the wall nutcase* than remembered as a *has-been* - and guess what? I find it easier to sell in our crazy ideas to clients and the wider market, than to the a lot of other agency people smile
So endeth my rant - phew thanks mate, I think responding to your posted acted as therapy to me !
Have fun
Sorry to hear about your situation Ironfist.
I agree with stealthman. It*s not an age problem, I think it*s more of a money issue.
Agencies still value your ideas, but they don*t want to pay you what you*re worth. They rather hire someone younger, with a lower job title and work them to death for a lower salary.
If you don*t burn out by the time you*re 40, then you get the pleasure of being nickel and dimed by the millionaire agency partners.
Just keep plugging away and something good will turn up. It always does.
Zales They lost a valuable item
I do not care for this company.
They lost a valuable heirloom.
They can make all the adds they want...but..they have a history of negligence with me.
Thanks Stealthman,
You know I have been doing what you reccomend without really thinking about it. I am rediscovering the fun of doing things again. Yup agree hundred percent what you say...have a job which may materialise with FCB...might be second week of December...i am using the time to get fitter, quit smoking...I used to be a Tae Kwon Do blackbelt now I am able to kick upto the knee wink.
Thanks to Bob and Robbie may the force be with you.
Ironfist.
Good on ya mate - and good luck with the potential job!
stealthman
Can*t recall at the moment but didn*t someone write a book on the ageism in advertisig when he found himself fired at 40? *drawing a blank* We wrote about it on adland even, but i cant remember where or when! augh!!
Hi,
My Zales comment landed in the wrong place...
BUT...to comment on age issues I worked with my
psychology in a market research related area
from age 24 to 26. I now seek a part time job.
Let me see how they treat me at 40.
Take Care,
Bob

Sorry, I moved it here - for some reason I thought you were replying to this thread when I read it. It is a cryptic post. Zales? Heirloom? ...?
