advertising-clueless
i found the other discussion entitled "Ideas on starting a portfolio and general questions for newbies" was very interesting. i*ll start to look for the books suggested, should be very helpful.
during uni we had a lot of group works, subjects included for instance creating brand strategy, retail management, a focus on customer satisfaction and some other stuffs. of course there were also some design ideas included in the report as they taught us how to use photoshop.
i was thinking that the position to start of in the ad agency might be in the account service department rather than the creative department. i wonder if it is neccessary in my case to create a portfolio? because i*m afraid that i don*t have enough individual works to display then; almost all of the assignments were group projects so the whole ideas didn*t come up from my own. should i put together all the group projects in uni and show them to the agency during the interview?

Hi everybody,
I*ve just completed my communication studies in Europe. Apparently English is not my first language but I*m planning to go to Australia to find a job there, in fact I*m leaving in about 2 months. I*m very much interested to start my career in advertising though I*m kinda clueless about the area. Anyone could help to describe what kind of positions are there in the ad agency along with the job list? I*m certainly not fit in the creative department as I am no designer nor a copywriter. But what are they exactly besides the creative jobs? Do you think the language become a barrier for the position?
Thanks in advance for your info. Cheers.
Apparently?
What did you just find this out? were you blissfully unaware of your ESL status before? wink
you*re right, maybe apparently is not the right word razz
but anyhows, i*m just a little bit worried if the language would be an obstacle for me to get in to the work place. so what do you think? any ideas, suggestions, any recommendation?
Well, nothing is impossible and in the advertising biz, doubly so.
depending on what other language(s) you speak it might even be turned into an advantage. Now, my aussie-ad experience is limited to have worked with writers from Australia, in Europe - but from what they told me business down under is hopping at the mo*. I know a few good ESL people who landed jobs in London at GGT, BBH and Saatchi (they were dutch, french and spanish) but they were all Art Directors.... I have no idea what job one is ready for after communications studies - shouldn*t your school have told you more about what they were preparing you for?
