What is the difference between airbrushing and photoshop? Do people still use airbrushing? When someone is saying, "hey that Christina Aguillera looks airbrushed," do they mean photoshopped?
What they mean to say is "Hey that Christina shot looks retouched".
See the art of retouching, Glenn Ferons portfolio for examples of modern pop-princess etc retouching.
Airbrushing is a way to spray ink (air & brush, geddit?) which is used to create great illustrations (it*s height of use as an illustration tool was probably in the 1980*s) and once was the preferred way to retouch a photograph. Then the modern invention of computers came along, and on computers came the program photoshop, which has a tool called the airbrush among it*s fiftenthousandcabillion neat-o tricks. In other words, retouching is often done in programs like photoshop - using the tool called airbrush. Airbrushes are still used today (I still have one). Photoshop is used for a bazillion other things as well as retouching.
Does that clear it up? smile
