A joke like that doesn*t have to be, no - but in this case I wasn*t taking a wild guess, I believed that the producers story about this ad as told here is true (since I know him and he*s an honest guy). See the interview. wink

Good*ay
What, from your point of view as professionals in the ad business, are skills that a good commercial director needs to bring to the table? In other words; what are you looking for in a director?
Greetings

hooo boy Marv, that really depends on the script.
Sometimes it is the uncanny ability to pull off technical magic, other times it*s the talent of the director that makes the actors do their thing so much better.
I*m usually looking for one that*ll do exactly as I say, and of course that never happens. wink hehe!
So I guess I like the ones that bring their creativity to the table but who talk about the ideas first and shoot second - rather than the directors who just shoot.
i*d say that the director has vision and is able to work thru the work given to him...yes, or her, and able to take some not so great creative and give it a boost creatively. they don*t step on toes but will do so if the creatives, talent, client, producers, cds, catering staff, camera operators, key grips, sound operators, you get the point, get an attitude or need to be put in their place. why do so many premadonnas gravitate to advertising.
they have to be technically savvy but not at the expense of the conceptual process.

Marv, that*s not really an easy question to answer which makes it damn good question. What you*re looking for in a director you are not going to find on a resume -- the only place to look is at his/her latest work. There are certain tasks any (every) good director can do, so what you*re looking for is getting a job done. Anyone can follow a plan and follow it exactly, what the good director adds is that little touch that makes the ad memorable. It can be a silly hat in the wrong place, it can be an unusual accent. What ever it is, it small, almost unnoticable, unremarkable, but absolutely right recall.
For an example of "directors touch" check this ad out and keep an eye out for the bulldog with headgear.

Yeah it*s a good joke, but that doesn*t necessarily have to be a director*s touch, does it? Maybe the writer of this spot described the scene with the dog and the director just executed it. So what*s a directors touch? The cameo by the director or blonde women in the movie (see Hitchcock)?
