Where to sell tv commercial ideas!

lets just say that it is super hard and a long process .. and by the time you get to do it with large chances that your idea will get killed by the time you produce it ... harsh reality

Hi Guys & Gals!

Talk about someone being Young Dog! Got it here.

For the past years, I have been thinking of trying my hand at submiting ideas for various commercials, either humorous or not. All kinds of ideas in my head. Many people I have spoken to or shared my ideas with all tell me they are decent ideas to very good ones.

I am not a writer by far, actually my trade is in the construction field as a Heavy Equipment Operator, this means I do serious work but at the same time I*m all alone with my thoughts for up to 14 hours a day. After the day is over, it*s home to my wife and kid and a bit of TV. Next morning comes and back ay work I think about what I have watched the night before along with commercials I have seen. That*s when these ideas start coming to me. Call me a dreamer if you want but we all daydream in each and our own way.

Now my question is where to sell these ideas?,,

does selling ideas pay?

I realize ideas have to be sold to the company and a lot of work and effort go into this before it*s even accepted. Does selling to Real Writers the way to go?

Is there an ad agency (I guess that*s what you call them? who work with you to try and pick your head for ideas?

Like I said I have NATTA experience in this stuff and I hope someone can start a thread with ideas on how to kick start this.

emails welcome also therealbass3rd@hotmail.com

Thanks

To be honest with you, everyone has dreams of selling TV commercial ideas....even the people who work in advertising....but it*s incredibly hard to get the opportunity to work on a TV campaign. You have to pay your dues...and even then...you have to compete with other teams just to get your ideas even considered. It*s almost like winning the lottery to get your ideas produced.

Have you seen The Apprentice episodes with Donny Deutsch? Making commercials ain*t easy....it just looks that way.

Aye, sadly it*s not bloody likely you can sell TV-ideas to creatives.

Getting ideas out there (them getting made is another matter)... Well, if you freelance, then it is possible to get ideas out to some young up and coming directors as they often ask for "spec scripts", that is TV ideas that they can shoot to show their skills off. They pay zilch. You*ll do it anyway because you love that idea so much you*d be thrilled to see it on actual film/video. Besides, it*ll look great in your portfolio too.

Clients the brands (Honda, Coppertone, Volkswagen) are often tied to contracts that say they shant even look at any unsolicited ideas, lest they end up in a legal battle later where you see *your* idea on telly and they end up having to prove that they didn*t get it from you. This is why clients often run - not walk - in the other direction if you approach them with ideas. The bigger the client the more true this is.

Agencies They see hundreds of ideas a day, they might want to see yours too. There is no guarantee that you will get a job due to these ideas (you don*t sound like you want one). They won*t pay you for a random idea - anything made has to answer to a brief. More often than not they steal anything you show them claiming they thought of it first.

Oh, and everything Rob said.

No I don*t want to do this for a living. After reading some of the posts on this site, I can see that it*s a very hard life you guys have to go through. With getting doors slammed in your face, getting ideas stolen away from you.

I guess I*ll just keep them to myself or make some video shoot and post them on some site somewhere.

Thanks anyways guys, you have deflated my balloon.

Guess I*ll try and become a millionaire by staying on the heavy Equipment job I have.

Any of you ever thought of making a living in the construction field??

Thanks rolleyes

aw poo, we didn*t mean to paint it in all black...

But hey, if you film your ideas yourself you could submit them to thespecspot.com - where commercial directors and people who want to become one put up their work for other people to rate. It*s a cool place, stop by and check some of the films out. The simple catchy ideas rate the highest. smile

Yeah sorry dude. I didn*t mean to be all "Debbie Downer" (Saturday Night Live reference) on you, but advertising isn*t fun....at least not for 95% of the creatives out there.

There aren*t too many millionaires in the business either...the only people who made a ton were the people who sold their agencies (David Ogilvy, Donny Deutsch and Jay Chiat).

Good luck with the heavy equipment. At least with the real estate boom, you should be busy for years to come.

Here*s a website that I read about in the new magazine ADdictive.

"OpenAd is a global platform for the buying and selling of advertising, design and marketing services ideas. It enables the direct connection between the creators and buyers of ideas. We also enable companies and agents to licence the use of these concepts".

http://www.openad.net/

Oh yeah, we wrote about that in june 2003, trying to see what the community here thought about it. "Is selling your ideas a good idea?"

ps - where does on buy ADictive off the shelf?

Though there might be something in buying people*s bad ideas so they never see the light of day. I*d pay not see a lot of ads out there.

Honestly. I have no idea where to buy it. I got it when visiting Hamburg and Miami Ad School Europe this weekend. I*ve got a campaign in the magazine. The magazine is in German. I guess it*s a shot at competing with Archive... Although, I would say judging this issue it won*t stand a chance. What*s strange is that ADdictive is produced out of Stockholm, Sweden. Apparently there is someone calling themselves Black Crown who produces it. As I don*t speak German (Unfo) I don*t really get everything in the magazine.

... Sorry to say so. But the magazin is really ugly and contains some really bad ads. Except some. Preferably the ones with my name... smile

I*m very curious. Scam? Detective Kidkie might investigate this case while smoking a cigarette in the light of an outdoor lamp. Trenchcoat and hat is included in the price.

Buying peoples bad idea... I thought that was what clients was all about? Not a very original thought... wink

Buying ideas to trash them would make you very poor and me very rich. I would make a business coming up with bad ideas just to sell them to you.

Going to freestyle an idea for you here and now. Here*s the first one... smile

"Opens at a man dressed in summer clothes walking down the street. He*s got a can of <insert energy drink brand> in his hand. Suddenly he steps into a dreamy landscape with a lot of beautiful flowers. Out of nowhere a gigantic monster comes rushing. The man looks at the can in is hand and desperatly drinks the whole can to free him of this scary scenario. *Poof* The man ends up in the street and takes a look at the can of <insert energy drink brand>. He looks around to make sure he*s okay and then cracks up a smile. Ends on man walking into the sundown."

VO "Stay awake. Sleeping is unsafe."

Packshot.

Ok this is turning into another thread but hey, for more places where you can buy ready-made ads, have you guys seen this place?

They *lease* out *award winning* TV ads with the slogan "great TV ads have already been produced". Yup.

... be very careful with OpenAd... trust me, I*am an OpenAd pitch winner... if you wish to upload ideas to any pitch, don*t send 10... send 3 *couse they will *own* all the ideas, not just those that win... mad

Exactly.

> trust me, I*am an OpenAd pitch winner... if you wish to upload ideas to > any pitch, don*t send 10... send 3 *couse they will *own* all the ideas,

> not just those that win..

Well, congrats for winning - and uhm.. Doesn*t the legal small print on the openad site make that abundantly clear? That*s why I din*t submit anything to them at all. Most idea-selling sites are like that. You can pitch in some "medium ok" ideas, and keep the ones you adore in your portfolio, but I would never send in stuff I really wanted to create one day there. Risk is, it would get stuck there unbought and unloved like you say.

However, if you do do up any of your other ideas - what are they going to do about it? Really? Can they do anything? Change a font here and a background color there and the execution is all different. They can only "own" a single execution of something. Not the whole idea. ....Or can they?
