Tourism Australia today launched “Transformation”, a new advertising campaign being rolled out in 22 countries around the world. Baz Luhrmann, known for his movies Moulin Rouge and William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, was responsible for the television and cinema commercials set in New York, Shanghai and Western Australia.
Original music for the New York commercial, Billabong, was composed by Sydney composer and song writer Elliott Wheeler, from sound and music boutique Nylon Studios.
The music for the New York spot was composed and recorded within a 48 hour timeframe in early September. Film directors Baz Luhrmann and Bruce Hunt called Nylon Studios on a Friday night a month before the launch, asking for a demo to be completed by the following Monday. Elliott composed two pieces on the Saturday before recording them with a string ensemble from Sydney Symphony Orchestra on the Sunday morning.
Once the creative team had chosen one of the tracks further work included the addition of multiple layers of piano tracks to create a a signature sound for the main piano melody, and careful sound engineering and mix by Wayne Connolly. Encouraged by warm response to the soundtrack, Wheeler has written an extended version with lyrics recorded by Abby Dobson from Sydney band Leonardo’s Bride.
“We wanted to use strings, but not on such a scale that we’d be dictating to the audience what they were meant to feel, so in the end we went with a much smaller chamber ensemble. We put a lot of energy into finding a balance between the intimacy expressed in the dialogue, and the grandness seen in the cinematography.”
Hi,
Can anybody help me? I am researching into branding in teenagers for my dissertation. I have read No Logo and Branded, and have been checking out the library/ internet for research but I am finding it difficult to focus what it is I want to ask as my question.
Basically I want to look at how branding has evolved (looking at one area - advertising whether it be, magazines, tv, etc) and how they "buy" teenagers with thier ads.
Has anybody got any tips for me? Any useful books/ sites, even opinions to get me thinking in different ways as Im stuck in a rut at the moment!!
Thanks confused
Heya
Do they have the book "The branded ape" at your library? I think that one can be useful for the overall branding picture (also kinda from a psycological point of view). It*s interesting enough to maybe get you thinking in other patterns and out of that rut. Unfortunatly I cant find it at amazon now... (and I forget the authors name)
On a related title, there*s also "branded - the buying and selling of teenagers" you can find that at amazon
branded the buying and selling...
hope that helps some!

Couple sites you should check out if you haven*t
Ad Flip and ad access and even maybe Emergence of Advertising in America for some older ads.
Good for looking at old ads and seeing the difference visually. smile

hehe, bad linking. wink
all the below mentioned links are in the adland adlink database together with 440 odd other ad related sites, divided into categories and rated by adgrunts here (well, the adgrunts who bother). I*m sure that will help along the research road.

Pffft! "Branding" is a rather big word, you could spend half the essay trying to explain what it is. "Branding" is a metaphor that stops agencies And Naomi Klein*s "no Logo" is more about big coprorations and exploitation than advertising itself. Instead read
Welcome to the Creative Age Bananas, Business and the Death of Marketing
Mark Earls
ISBN 0-470-84499-X
He was one of the founders of St Lukes and explains marketing and "branding" (he suggest using the word "b*nard" istead, just to remind yourself that "brand" is also a nonsense word)
Or check out http//www.brandchannel.com/papers.asp for LOTS of stuff on branding
Have you read any books on actual advertising it might help. Honest. "Ogilvy on advertising" or "hey whipple squeeze this"
Or you can allways ask us, if you have any specific questions.

An interesting thing to check out is a market research firm; I believe it*s called Look Look... they have (or had) people out in "the field," armed with cameras, taking notes and constantly searching for the Next Big Thing... budding trends in fashion, music and culture.
They were featured in a documentary a few years back, with an emphasis on marketing to teens. My partner had taped it for me but it*s been sooo long... I*ll have to ask him when and where it aired. You*d probably find it useful.
