Those are some fine print ads.

I am still working on a JR book, and just today got up the guts to walk into my local gym and propose I re-work their flyer. Well, the short is, I got laughed right out of there.

But has anyone else had luck with this sort of thing? Offering to do ads for free for local businesses, even though you are pretty clueless?

Have you considered doing the work on spec for them and then showing them a (near-) finished product? It*s a a bit harder to say no to a finished product that is measurably better than the existing product. Not impossible, of course. But it might be something to consider.

If it*s a franchise/local branch/whatever of a major gym, they may not have the authorization to do whatever they want. If it*s just like Fred*s Weight Room or something, then it*s a different story. smile

I*ve worked off and on with an agency in the town I went to college in, and the way I even got their attention was by showing them what I can do. I think, at least as an unproven quantity, it definitely helps to be able to back your words up with some work.

Best of luck on your work -- I*m still trying to get going as well.

One of my instructors basically launched his career off of some side spec work he did for his dog trainer. They ran them in the village voice, entered them in the shows, he swept and then someone approached him about turning them into tv spots and he won a bunch of stuff off those too. After that he was somebody and went on to big things.

here*s the ads if you*re interested
