Headhunters that deal with Big-Wig agencies
Always interested to hear from great creatives. I am a creative headhunter who I hope might alter your impressions of using creative headhunters in the past.
I work for Kendall Tarrant

Actually, I*m onlly posting in this forum because I find it depressing that it is empty.
When you guys pounded your portfolio around the pavement in this big ol* adworld of ours - which headhunters have actually successfully helped you?
I*m asking because unfortunatly - I have had a terrible trackrecord with headhunters. Not one single job I got was through a headhunter - though I have used plenty of them.
Instead of making a shame-list (though I guess we all could do that too) I*d like to see a praise list. Which headhunters or reps have actually scored you some work?
Of course you guys - hiding behind nicknames - can feel free to make a shamelist though.
wink Unfortunatly people are pretty clued in to who I am and I don*t feel comfortable naming headhunters that I*ve used and been dissapointed in. Some have been worse than others. Some have tried to get me work , at least (hooray) just not scoring work as fast as I did without their help.
Short memory span in headhunters has got to be a sin. razz
ps - Illustrators reps and photo reps and freelancer reps are game too! Give us the good ones in your area! grin
It has been my experience that headhunters work for themselves and not for the agencies or the creatives.
Example -
Me I want to work for a creative hot shop and produce conceptual advertising!
Headhunters That*s great! You have a good book to let you do that too! Hmmm...here*s the game plan, first I*m going to send you to a business-to-business agency and if that doesn*t pan out, I*ll send you to a direct marketing company! Or how about writing catalog copy for a department store?
I*ve only had one \"success\" with a headhunter, but then again, he sent me to an agency I*ve never considered working for! mad
Well, I*m registered with numerous places here and they*ve gotten me nothing. Hard to tell if that*s due to the hiring climate or their lack of being able to do their job. Prior to the job slump, I never used them, so it*s hard for me to tell.
There*s only thing that makes me think headhunters are some what not useful-if you*ve sent work or contacted someone at an agency about a job they won*t present you to them. I think that*s kind of stupid. Since not all agencies go through headhunters, I*ve done my own \"pavement pounding\", only to find out that I have to keep doing it for the agencies I*ve already contacted, as they cannot present me to them if something opens up. I thought headhunters were going to make life a bit easier! As that*s the case, I*ve just been doing it all myself for the most part. Seems easier in the long run.
For freelance work...had decent experience with The Creative Group. Others just blow me off when I call to check in, which just annoys me.
Golly.
and here I was hoping that I just had bumped into a couple of bum ones and had these kinds of experiences. That \"brush off\" bit too.
Yeah, it*s unfortunate, but I think uncaring, opportunistic creative headhunters are global.
I dunno. I guess also from what I*ve gathered CDs, especially at the larger agencies, would rather not pay a headhunter, since most of them get enough portfolios sent to them unsolicited anyways.
For juniors theyreally would rather not use headhunters - as they swim in portfolios from this leaugue daily and probably have a creative recruiter (dont get me started on these...) to look through them.
Though I know plenty of agencies whom in the press (Goodby comes to mind) state they never use headhunters they find talent on their own.. Then when they need the right man in the right place right NOW they are on the phone to the headhunters anyway..
mad
I can say that as an unemployed account guy, the headhunters have been basically useless for me, but I think that*s due more to the current advertising slump more than anything else. If I were looking to switch agencies in a non-recessionary economy, I would prefer to cherry pick the agencies I would like to work for on my own, but that*s just my personal preference.
It is all very true. Unless you are a creative director, agencies do not need to use head hunters to get good staff. Especially these days, when everybody is looking for a job.
But there are head hunters that are quite professional, can recognise a good book when they see it. Who are they? I*ll tell you later. Maybe they can*t help you get that job at Mother or at 180. But they can help you find a suitable partner, they can give you tips and insights. Especially if you*re not native to that town and don*t know all the ins and outs.
When I was in London to look for a job, my first appointment was with a head hunter. She was very helpful and gave me a couple of addresses and some names of people I should call. In fact a creative director even called me to make an appointment! Me! Just another junior copywriter... eek
And then there is this head hunter in Amsterdam who helped me team up with an art director.
Okay, so here are the names of that few good headhunters amongst the wolves
For Amsterdam
Annette Rijken (a.net@wxs.nl)
For London
Liz Harold at HaroldMcGregor
Maybe I was just lucky, maybe things have changed (this was 3 years ago), who knows?
Daag Erik! gezellig to see you again. razz
