Eskimos In Advertising Campaigns

Greetings. I am an Inuk (singular of Inuit-You may know us as Eskimos) living on Baffin Island in the Candian Eastern Arctic.

I have been collecting and researching examples of advertising campaigns featuring Eskimos or Eskimo themes.
To date, I have concentrated on print campaigns and I have so far, accumulated over 100 examples spanning 150 years, from a number of different countries. I am now looking to expand my horizons and start looking into TV campaigns.

I would be most grateful to anyone who could let me know of any TV ad campaigns featuring eskimos either current or historical. I would also appreciate any pointers to archives or insitutions that may be able to assist me or who might have such items in their holdings.

Interesting - that sounds like a very good collection!

I hope you've seen the Jeep Cherokee -Dog Sleigh race - part three in Badland featuring dog sleigh rides even - and you must have seen the playstation ad with the blind man and the beatiful landscape shots? [supers only the last link]

Anyone else know any?

If you're a superadgrunt, you can also find "Audi Quattro - Lessons" by using the search thingy. That's the only other one I can think of right now.

Oh yeah - if you're going for over-stereotypical-type Eskimo stuff, Coors Light had five variations of one of their campaign spots involving igloos - type "igloo" in the search field and they'll show up.

"Jeep Liberty Renegade - Seal" might be up your alley as well, but I'm not sure of the ethnicity of the fella with the ice spear.

And, of course, if you consider Santa Claus to be Eskimo, then you've got plenty to choose from. (I hear he's from the Tlingit Nation in Alaska.)

Hope that helps some.

There's a freezer bag commercial that I worked on a few years ago... It featured an Inuk gentlemen and his wife in bed in their 'igloo' (excuse any stereotypes - I didn't write it) and the husband walks out into the snow to fetch some food that they had stored in the snowpack... later we return and he is using zip lock bag to store chicken catciatore... thus improving his life by using this product...

If it sounds like crap... It was.

good luck..

Regarding your question about adverts being archived, I'm going to give you a boring account exec answer.

When it comes to competitive reviews for clients (which is the main reason why you'd want to search adverts), what you need to look at is when and where ads for a specific brand were produced. The actual theme of the advert is largely of little consequence in the client's eyes. Perhaps the only time when it is useful is when creatives want to check whether their ad - or the theme - has been done before. But knowing creatives, they probably wouldn't bother doing that. ;-)

Hope that's useful.

I think Yahoo shopping did a commercial with a family who bought summer gear for their igloo. Sony also had a high school basketball player who videotaped himself to send to a college coach.

Dajaniel is right - We're too busy shooting up heroin and having inappropriate relations with stolen farm animals to check and see if our work is original.

(Now where'd I put that darn goat?...)

... I just remembered some strange Wasa crisp bread advert ..
Basketball played on snow, one player started his morning with a nice light crispbread - the other guy with regular heavy bread. Guess who falls straight through the thin layer of ice on the snow?... years ago.. memory is fuzzy.... tagline: "you become what you eat" [as per usual for Wasa campaigns in sweden]

Hmmm not sure if this helps, but Guinness are currently running a commercial in England featuring a dancing eskimo. The product is for Guinness Extra cold

Eskimo changed her email and lost her password but she asked me to post the url here for an article on the exhibit that was held last year.
It is going to be touring Europe soon. This thing really took off.
Enjoy

In the meantime, please continue to keep your eyes peeled and let us know what you see in your area. The "Eskimo" in advertising still has many ad miles left in him.
Thanks.

I remember an ad from a few years ago for Eggo Waffles that took place in an igloo. Not sure if we've got it in the archives here.

Greetings, Inuk from Baffin Island. My name is Nayuq, I am Inupiat from Northwest Alaska. I am currently attending a college in Northern California and conducting research for a thesis concerning Eskimos in television ads. I do know of one particular commercial with NICE cough drops that my uncle acted in. Try a search under their product for that. Do you have any tips for me, or any links that can show me poster and/or television ads misrepresenting Eskimos that might help me with my research, besides those that are already posted here? I'd appreciate the help as well.

Hullo Nayuq.
These days there's even a a tag for the word Eskimo - but it's pretty spartan.

Hello,

Thanks for the leads, much appreciated. I know it's hard to find them online.
