Nio. "Electric supercar record breaker" at Nurburgring. (2016) (UK)

LONGFORM London director Yannakis Jones, has teamed up with brand agency INTERSTATE to produce two short films to launch electric car brand NIO. NIO is a Chinese brand looking to take on the likes of Tesla.
The first film sees their EP9 supercar challenge and beat the electric lap record at the infamous 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife. The EP9 supercar is NIO’s first product.

Shooting the record attempt in one day, the crew worked with track-side cameras, in-car cameras, drones, a helicopter and a chase car to record every angle and movement of the vehicle.

“We had little control of the car itself, which the engineers were still testing, but the films still needed to have a super premium finish to reflect the brands ambition. Without knowing what would happen on the track day with this experimental vehicle, the shoot required thorough preparation for all possible outcomes.” Yannakis Jones, Director

Production then flew to the South of France to shoot a second brand content film of the EP9 supercar in further technical testing at Circuit Paul Ricard. Animated graphics were created by Not To Scale, to further illustrate the state-of-the-art technology involved in the powertrain, brake system and aerodynamic composition of the car. The post production team raced against the clock to edit, grade and conform the two films ready for World wide brand launch at The Saatchi Gallery to the world’s automotive press.
The two films are a NIO visual statement for the technical and manufacturing capabilities of the new brand - what is possible for the future of electric cars. An impressive gauntlet has been thrown down, underlining the NIO brand end line “Blue Sky Coming” .
